Laura and Brook had us on board as their wedding photographers, and they went all in with a full 12-hour photoshoot! The big day went down in May, and the vibes were anything but uptight. Quick as a flash, we all hightailed it to the Karaoke bar, which, might I add, was a blast.

Grand Velas generally requires an outside vendor fee, but if you book me as a guest for a minimum of 3 nights, that fee is typically waived. I highly recommend hiring a dedicated photographer, especially for rainy days, because I am already familiar with the resort’s indoor lighting and covered locations to ensure a seamless experience regardless of the weather.
What are the best locations for photos if it rains?
Grand Velas is arguably the best resort for rainy day photography because the architecture is stunning. If the beach is washed out, I know exactly where to pivot—from the dramatic thatched roof and lush jungle walkways of the Zen Grand section to the sheltered, elegant terraces of the Ambassador. These hidden gems allow us to capture moody, high-fashion portraits with sophisticated backdrops without you ever getting wet.
Does the resort package handle bad weather photography well?
While resort packages include basic coverage, they often rely heavily on natural sunlight. When it rains, natural light fades quickly. My clients hire me independently because I bring professional off-camera lighting specifically suited for gloomy or indoor scenarios. How do we handle transportation between sections in the rain?
Grand Velas is spread out between the Jungle (Zen) and Ocean sections. Walking or taking open carts during rain isn’t an option in a wedding dress. I prioritize your comfort by coordinating enclosed van transportation with the concierge ahead of time. My logistical experience here ensures we move safely between the sheltered jungle pathways and the oceanfront lobbies, keeping your hair and makeup pristine while maximizing our shooting time.
How does rain affect the best time for photos?
Overcast skies actually provide the softest, most flattering light for skin tones, acting as a giant softbox. However, rainy days get dark much earlier than sunny ones. I will help you adjust your wedding timeline to start portraits earlier to utilize the available natural light. If the rain continues into the evening, I specialize in creative “backlit rain shots” that turn the weather into a romantic, cinematic element of your story.
Can we get sunset photos over the ocean at Grand Velas?
Like most of the Riviera Maya, the sun sets over the jungle side, not the ocean. On a rainy or overcast day, this actually works to our advantage; the cloud cover acts as a giant softbox, creating flattering, even light perfectly suited for the lush greenery of the Zen Grand section. If the weather clears, we can capture the moody, dramatic blue hour light on the beach, or utilize the warm ambient lighting of the resort’s terraces to create romantic evening portraits against the twilight sky.

Where are the best spots for a “First Look” if it is raining?

Alternatively, the grandiose hallways connecting the Ambassador suites offer beautiful natural window light and architectural lines without exposing you to the rain. Do we need a second shooter for a Grand Velas wedding?
I highly recommend it, especially when factoring in weather logistics. Grand Velas is divided into three distinct sections (Zen, Ambassador, and Grand Class) that are separated by a considerable distance, requiring shuttle transport. If it is raining, travel time increases. Having a second shooter means one of us can capture the groom in the Zen section while I am with the bride in Grand Class, ensuring full coverage without the risk of missing moments while transiting through the rain.
