Wedding Photography at Hotel Mahekal, Playa del Carmen

by Photo Shoots, Playa del Carmen (Riviera Maya), ⭐ Favorite Wedding

We were absolutely stoked to be the lucky photographers for Fatima and Justin’s big day. They went all-in with the 8-hour photo package, and let me tell ya, it was a blast. So, let’s dive into the deets!

We kicked off the year in style, capturing their beautiful wedding in January. The vibe was laid-back, and we were totally on board with that. Fatima and Justin were getting all dolled up in their rooms at the awesome Mahekal Beach Resort. I mean, can you imagine a more picturesque setting to start their journey as a married couple?

The ceremony was a total heart-melter, set in the resort’s stunning garden. Seriously, it was like something out of a fairy tale. And when the “I dos” were said and done, it was time to let loose.

The cocktail hour and dinner went down just a few steps away, right there at Las Olas Bar, with the sound of the waves in the background. It was pure magic, I tell you.

Now, it’s the moment you’ve been waiting for – the photos! We’ve cherry-picked the absolute best shots for you. Trust me, you won’t want to miss these. It’s like reliving the whole day in snapshots, and we couldn’t be happier to share them with you. Enjoy!

Wedding Photographer FAQ’S

Can I bring my own external photographer to Mahekal Beach Resort?

Yes! You are absolutely welcome to bring me in as an outside vendor. The resort generally requires an outside vendor fee, but if you book me as a guest (typically for a minimum of 3 nights), that fee is often waived. I highly recommend hiring a dedicated photographer because I am already familiar with the specific vendor policies here and know how to navigate the resort’s unique layout to ensure a seamless experience on your big day.

What are the best locations for wedding photos at the resort?

Mahekal is famous for its “boho-chic” vibe—blending lush jungle gardens with the turquoise Caribbean sea—and I know exactly where to take you for the most stunning backdrops. Whether it’s the vibrant greenery along the stone pathways, the iconic hand-thatched palapa bungalows, or the pristine white sands near the Fuego deck, I know where the hidden gems are. This ensures we get a huge variety of looks, from tropical jungle to open ocean, without wasting your precious time.

Does the resort package include photography services?

While some Mahekal packages include basic photography, it is often limited regarding hours and image count. My clients usually prefer hiring me independently to ensure full-day coverage—capturing everything from your getting-ready moments in the bungalows to the late-night reception party. When you work with me, I guarantee a consistent artistic style and a personal connection that goes far beyond the standard resort offerings.

How do we handle moving between locations on the property?

Because Mahekal features winding garden paths and sandy beachfronts, moving around in wedding attire requires a bit of planning. I prioritize your comfort by guiding you through the most accessible routes to avoid unnecessary walking in heels or heavy dresses. My logistical experience with the property’s layout allows us to move between the lush gardens and the beach quickly, maximizing your time celebrating with guests while I still capture those cinematic portraits.

When is the best time for wedding photos in Playa del Carmen?

Lighting is everything in the Riviera Maya. The mid-day sun can be incredibly harsh, so I always recommend we schedule your romantic portraits during “Golden Hour,” roughly an hour before sunset. I will help you build your wedding timeline to take full advantage of this soft light, ensuring your oceanfront photos look dreamy rather than overexposed, while perfectly timing the transition from your ceremony to the reception.

Can we get sunset photos over the ocean at Mahekal Beach Resort?

It is important to remember that on the Riviera Maya, the sun rises over the ocean and sets over the jungle side. I will schedule our couple’s session to capture the stunning soft light of the “Golden Hour” on the beach, but if you truly want the sun coming up directly over the water, I might suggest a “First Look” session at sunrise. For the evening, I will position you to catch the beautiful cotton-candy colors filling the sky behind the swaying palm trees and thatched-roof bungalows.

What happens if it rains on our wedding day?

One of the things I love about Mahekal is its bohemian, eco-chic architecture. If tropical rain occurs, I know exactly where to find the best covered locations that still feel connected to nature. We can utilize the open-air terraces with their beautiful palapa roofs, the vibrant and eclectic decor inside Boli’s Bar, or the covered walkways lined with lush greenery. These backup spots ensure I can keep your gallery organic and sophisticated regardless of the weather.

Is Mahekal suitable for large destination weddings?

Absolutely. While Mahekal feels like an intimate oasis, it is a premier destination for medium-to-large events because of its flexible outdoor spaces like the Las Olas deck or the expansive gardens. I am well-versed in navigating these layouts, understanding the critical angles needed for a reception under the stars, how to capture the details of a beachside dinner, and how to manage crowds in a sand-floor setting to capture every toast and dance move perfectly.

Where are the best spots for a “First Look” away from guests?

Because the resort is located right in the heart of Playa del Carmen, the main beach area can be lively. However, I know several secluded garden paths, quiet corners near the Revive Spa, and hidden hammocks nestled between the bungalows that offer much more privacy. As your photographer, I scout these lush, green locations beforehand to ensure your intimate first look remains private and free of vacationers in the background.

Do we need a second shooter for a Mahekal wedding?

Although Mahekal is more intimate and walkable than the massive mega-resorts, I still recommend a second shooter. The property is laid out with winding paths and separate bungalows, often meaning the bride and groom are getting ready in different areas of the jungle gardens. Working with a team ensures that we can cover the groom’s candid moments and guest arrivals at the ceremony site while I am focused on the bride’s final preparations.
